I have 3 small anubias. Do the roots have to be rapped around something or does it matter if the roots are growing willy nilly in any direction?
I've never wrapped mine around anything. They are planted in sand. There are many roots above the sand that are growing like you describe. Doesn't seem to hurt them. I've got one of my plants that has grown a sister plant (if that is possible) :) Oh, and they've flowered too.
I think it gets desperate to hold onto something/be buried. My anubias is floating and it's roots are a mess, it's like it's trying to find something to grab. If only I had a picture! But, it's growing really well floating.

They really should be tied to driftwood or a stone. If planted they can rot. (not always, but not worth the risk.)
Floating is okay too, but the roots will grow larger. They also seem to like lower light levels, so it you let it float, make sure it doesn't get covered with algae.
As long as the rhizome isnt under the substrate it wont rot and it will be fine. If there's something large to grab onto, the roots will only be a little neater, it will always reach for more things to anchor to. If you float them, it will be a massive mess of thick leaves and roots. If you want to propogate, just cut it at the rhizome and move them plants apart.
