Snail Infestation Help!!
I have tried just about everything to get rid of this snail overpopulation and have decided I need to sterilize the tank and everything in it. Can I do this with bleach/water? Can I bleach the driftwood log? :-?
Snails are not harmful to an aquarium, and are actually something you want. They are hard to avoid. There are fish that will eat them. If you have a large enough tank, Angelicus Botica loaches will eat them. I wish I could keep some in my one tank, but the loaches eat them. You can put a piece of cucumber in the tank, and by morning you should have a lot on that, and you can than toss.
You can send them to me :) I have a puffer that would love them :-D
As far as using bleach, I hear you can use it (diluted) and use a water conditioner like Prime, that will detoxify the chemicals, but I wouldn't chance it. Snails (assuming they aren't the cone shaped, Malaysian trumpet snails, don't do well with salt). You could use a salt solution to soak your wood.
I've read you can use a piece of lettuce, too. Rinse it in hot water (I guess to wilt it a little?) then put it in your tank at night. In the morning, a lot of the snails will be on it and you can just pick it up and discard it.
Also, have you ask your local fish/pet store if they'd take any of the snails? They might give you a little credit for them.
I had a similar thing with 1 of my aquariums, altho they are useful the entire "pest" snail population was wiped out with a combination of yoyo loach and assasin snails! Im now actually asking my lfs for any pest snails they have for a treat to my useful little inhabitants! Altho i have found that any pest snails left have retreated to the shelter of my cannister filter, so there still doing what the do to be helpful without fear of being eaten
Just have a piece of cucumber sit at the bottom of the tank overnight. In the morning all the snails will be eating it, which will be easy to scoop out and flush down the toilet.
You have a snail infestation because you are feeding your fish too much.
I feed all of my fish once every other day at the most.
