Platy color change
My blue Platy which is very gravid and ready to pop is literally turning green and white under the light with the exception of natural light. I want to say it is a algae problem however I do 50% water change per week and clean out the filter every other day..She is the only one affected and she seems healthy and is eating well..should I buy algae treatment?? any other ideas would be greatly appreciated..thx
As long as it isn't velvet, I wouldn't worry too much. You don't need algae chemicals with platies, especially if you are about to get fry. Platies are great algae eaters. If anything, I would cut down feeding a bit. I hope you are also cleaning your filter with de-chlorinated tank water and not tap water.
Turn off the lights and put a flashlight on your fish. If there is gold dusting, you might have a velvet issue.
what do you mean by velvet issue?? I use tap water with water conditioner..I feel stupid to ask about decolrinated water..means let it stand overnite??? sorry I dont want to come across stupid been a while since I have done this lol..thanks for your help
As for changing water, always treat new water especially from the tap, chlorine will kill your biological filter and will mess up your nitrogen cycle. Seachem Prime is highly recommended for this. I would start testing your water as well, luckily platies are very tough but ammonia is still a no-no. Seachem Prime is once again recommended if you get ammonia or nitrite problems, at least until you get your filter going. Try to get some seeded material from a friend with a good tank (sponge, ornament, plant) because fish in cycling is a pain.
