Bad smell! Black roots?

Long story short, I pulled up my apongeton cripus to split it for another tank. There was a root tab in there. Anyways HUGE root system now.. But the base of it is black, and smells HORRIBLE. There are still tons of little white roots.
Did the root tabs produce this bad smell? The roots rotted? From what? Oh my poor nose. :(
Oh, also don't ask about my lighting because it's some crummy old light. Picking up a 6500k bulb this weekend. But the top of the plant is growing fine.

not sure with aquarium plants but thats normal for pond plants, the roots become too large and the plant allows the older one that arent pulling anything in to die, usually turns into a black stinking mess of rotting plant matterthat the healthy roots feed off of

Well, I clipped em off because the whole tank has been stinking for weeks and I never knew why. Hopefully the plant will be fine!

Some of the plant's mentioned,( Aponogeoton)go through seasonal dormant state, and leaves die off.
Plant survives by storing nutrient's in the bulb and re-sprout's week's,month's later.
Would agree though that if smell was that bad,, I might toss what's left , or try and grow it in out door tub where the smell would not be too offensive.

It's not overpowering anymore. I think the plant should be fine.. I know that they die off sometimes, I just figured it's leaves would die, not the roots. My Aponogeoton (can't spell that for the life of me ) But I have a natans species too, and besides that it does not grow at all it's bulb is fine. Hopefully the lighting upgrade will help it grow, love these plants.
