strange water evaporation issues?
one of my tanks is loosing water at a high rate. its a 5 gallon eclipse- its got one small airstone and a biowheel filter. there is one betta who lives in it. the tank has only recently been loosing water at about the rate of 1 to 2 inches per day. i can't find any water leakage. the tank has a full hood. could it be due to the house heater being on? the room is warmer than usual due to the heat being on this week.
(imagine, needing heat in texas?? haha. yep. its on!)
I will bet the removal of the airstone would help significantly. The more surface agitation there is, the faster the water will evaporate. The airstone is not necessary, there will be more than enough air in the water for the betta generated by the biowheel. Not to mention their labyrinth organ ;)
I bet if you unplug the airstone for a day or so, refill the water, you will notice the rate will drop dramatically.
Good luck. :D
Good call about the heat being on in the house. When you run the heat in the house it dries out the air. If the air above the water in your tank is dry, more water will evaporate. Also the air stone will add to the amount that evaporates.
so i opened the hood and poked around and it turns out- the airstone was making a lot of excess condensation on the hood, which was dripping very slightly down the cord at the back of the hood. it was sooo slight, that it dried before a puddle could form- which is why i never found any puddles of water. i am sure thats the problem. i removed the airstone completely, and taped the cord back away from the small opening near the filter, and fo far the water level is staying put! mystery solved- hopefully!
