- - Hi (http://www.tropicalfishkeeping.com/introduce-yourself/hi-103756/)
We just started a tank and bought some platys and it appears that one of them is pregnant can someone send me some pictures of a pregnant one and also some advice on them
Your platy is probly pregnant, most platys are when you get them. Also you will only make this mistake once because pregnant platys are a NIGHTMARE!They can give birth to 10-50 fry each time and ussally have 3-4 batches of babies with only one mating. This can mean up to 100 fish. Also the parents usually don't eat the fry becsaues the are exelant hiders and you probly wont see them until a couple of days after their born depending on how much plants and deco you have for them to hide under.I got a female platy that was already pregnant and by the 4th batch of fry we got rid of her becaues she must have had about 20 fry each batch and about 10 survied each time because after about a week and a half the fry are to big that the parents dont really cosider them food any more and wont pursue them for more than a few inches. So we had about 40 fry in a 20 gal. and finally got rid of them.I will never again by platys.
Good luck with your platys! I've never had to deal with pregnant fish
