Molly/guppy compatability?

JUst making sure, Are mollies and guppies compatable in the same tank?

I will be breeding them, but there will be alot of plastic plants and java moss...

Its 14 gallon, and there are two female guppies and one male, and one male molly and three females.

They're compatible, but they can interbreed.

LyzzaRyzz 06-06-2012 02:47 PM

Huh. I didnt k now that.

Good thing im breeding for feeders!

How would i know if the fry are interbred or pure bred?

jaysee 06-06-2012 02:47 PM

I would not keep mollies in a small tank like that. And yes, they can inter breed to make muppies.

LyzzaRyzz 06-06-2012 02:55 PM

a 14 gallon is a small tank?

I was under the impression the smallest for guppies/mollies was 10 gallons...

jaysee 06-06-2012 02:56 PM

Yes, 14 gallons is a small tank :)

Mollies are several times larger than guppies, reaching up to 6 inches long.

LyzzaRyzz 06-06-2012 03:14 PM

Hmm, wish id known that before i bought them!

Well, ive got until after quarantine to get my other 10 gallon set up for the guppies..

Ive never seen any mollies that are bigger than an inch and a half..I figured thats the max size! Six inches? Thats insane!

Anyone have adult size comparisons? I know that some fish have a max size, but most of the time, they dont reach that size..only in optimal settings...

How big a tank should i have for housing the mollies and guppies together? There are two female guppies, and one male, and three female mollies, and one male...

jaysee 06-06-2012 03:22 PM

Yes, they are a larger fish that produces a lot of waste. Chances are that they won't reach 6 inches, but I would count on 4 for sure, which is still too big. It goes guppy - platy - swordtail - molly for size. Of course there are other livebearer species, but those are the big 4.

Hahaha, soooo, are you saying you plan to keep the fish in less than optimal conditions?

I'd look for a 29, if you want to breed and raise the fish.

LyzzaRyzz 06-06-2012 03:22 PM

And ive been reading, and some threads are mentioning brackish water? For mollies? I thought they were freshwater??

jaysee 06-06-2012 03:33 PM

They can be acclimated to full marine, and are kept everywhere in between.
