testing for ammonia with prime
How long after a water change with Prime will it take for a correct ammonia reading? While Prime has the ammonia bound up , does helpful bacteria eat it or does it wait for the Prime to wear off?
Yes, the ammonia is consumed by bacteria while it's locked up. I don't know if there is a specific time to wait, but most say 24 hours.
According to Seachem, in response to a direct question from me, Prime remains effective for 24 to 36 hours. Its binding of the ammonia and nitrite is such that these are rendered "safe" but they will both still show using our basic aquarium test kits like the API.
If either remains evident after 24 hours, I would look into the cause and take appropriate action. If there are live plants, a decent number including some faster growing species, I wouldn't worry as they will handle the ammonia/ammonium.
