How to prevent Tiger Barb bullying. Please Help!
I am new to these forums and a new aquarium owner, and I am writing this thread because I am worried about my new tank!
I recently bought a new 10 gallon tank and I put 3 tiger barbs and a shark inside. The barbs leave the shark alone, but the bigger barb has been very aggressive on the other 2 barbs. The other 2 are so scared they just hide behind the filter while the bully roams around the entire tank. No fin nipping yet though.
How can I fix this problem? I am thinking of buying 3 more cherry barbs, would that help them form into a shoal and decrease aggression?
Thank you for your time!
Your tank will be too small for a "shark". I'm assuming it's a red-tail shark. But, yes getting a number such as 5 will help with the aggression. You may want to create some visual barriers, with live plants, rocks etc. You also may need to upgrade the tank in the near future. Welcome to the site! You'll learn a lot :-D
The cherry barbs would likely be killed by the tiger barbs, if not directly then over time due to stress of constant harassment of nipping and chasing.
Both of these species should be kept in groups of at least six, more is better for the tiger barbs, but you don't have room. A ten gallon tank is really too small for any of these fish, small less active fish would be a better choice.
You mention this is a new tank, has it cycled properly?
Agree. Consider returning them and getting dwarf fish. A dwarf gourami and some dwarf cories would be nice. You can also do a shrimp only tank, which are kind of cool to have :)
I'm with the others, this tank is too small for the fish selected.
Barbs are by nature feisty, and thus must be in larger groups which means more tank space. Especially the Tiger Barb which is a notorious fin nipper. We have fish profiles, second tab from the left in the blue bar across the top of the page; if the fish name shades in a post you can click it for the profile [see names below for example]. Please check the data there, it will explain this.

Thank you all for the great feedback!
I removed the bully from the tank and things have calmed down in my tank!
I just bought 3 more barbs and added a thick shrub.
They are now very peaceful!
Thanks for all the help guys!:-)
