My new 55g tank - Still Cycling
I'm new to the hobby and wanted to share my new tank. I got this tank for my kids because they LOVE fish. I haven't decided what kind of fish to put in the tank yet, but I'm thinking about a cichlids and I want rare colorful ones, not the ordinary one from the local pet store.
I wish I would have joined Tropical Fish Keeping before I got the tank because as you can kinda see in the picture, the fish store gave me 4 goldfish to cycle the tank :(
I will continue to add photos as I continue my adventure.
1. Any suggestions on what kind of cichlids i should get?
2. And how many my tank can hold?
3. How many pleco can I get?
Sorry all the newbie questions.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thank you all!
Welcome to the hobby! Cichlids are a great choice.. I used to keep them. They were too mean for me though, it hurt my feelings when they attacked each other :0)
Goldfish are actually a good way to get a tank started, they put out a lot of waste to feed the bacteria that need to grow in order for your tank to be ready for more fish.
I always liked peacock cichlids. They are a little nicer than others and they are a very pretty dark blue. They do get beat up by other breeds though because they are a little more timid... well mine did anyway.
If you keep cichlids you will need WAY more rocks than plants in the tank. Cichlids have to have many rock crevasses to hide in because they will start claiming multiple holes as their own and the ones being chased will need places to hide. You will also need to change the rock formation all the time to discourage territories from being formed.
