Sick Neon Tetra?
I have ten neon tetra, seven on which I have had in my tank for about two months, three which were added about 1 month ago. I have noticed this morning that one of my smaller tetra (so I'm presuming it was one of my newer ones) is floating up on its own at the top of my tank and is staying stationary but its head is angled downwards and is flicking it's fins very occasionally to stay in place. This tetra also seems to be paler in colour than all my other tetra, including the other two which were purchased at the same time. I've also noticed it's eyes are quite enlarged in comparison. Some of the other tetra are chasing it whenever they come up to it or it moves...I'm just wondering what this is? My other fish seem happy enough and I've only noticed it doing it since yesterday..
There was JUST a thread about this the other day, I believe the verdict was that the current was too strong? Check this thread:
This might not be the same situation, as you seem to only have one fish with the problem. . . but there are a few suggestions in that thread that might steer you in the right direction.
Hope it helps!
Sounds like Neon Tetra Disease: Fish Disease - Neon Tetra Disease
I do advise you that if you want to keep Neons, that you keep a minimum shoal of 6. The more, the better though. Less than the minimum shoal stresses them out and makes them more prone to disease and illness.
With only one fish behaving this way, it is most likely a health issue, not the water current. It could be internal injury from some time prior, or aggression stress, or a protozoan, etc.
Diagnosing illness is very difficult. Resist the temptation to put any form of medication in the tank unless you have the issue identified by someone with the knowledge to ID the diease, which is not me.
Thanks guys, it seems to have come right again...no dead tetra so that's always a good start!! I have ten in the tank, but seven of them are definitely bigger than the other three. I had my water tested just to make sure it wasn't that and my water came back perfect which was a nice surprise...at least it seems to be better and happier so that's all that matters to me! Just want them to be healthy :-) Thanks for the tips tho!
