Are there any cichlids compatible with a rainbow shark?

Hello everyone

I currently have a 4 inch male rainbow shark and a 4 inch female African featherfin catfish in a 29 gallon awaiting to be re-homed in a 55 gallon tank. They have lived together for almost two years with virtually no problem. The catfish is definitely queen of the tank with out a doubt, and i have read and seen they can also be kept with African cichlids. i was wondering if the shark would be ok with SA cichlids much less African ones. Does anyone have experiences with the two species together? if so i would love to hear.

thanks!

They dont do well with Africans as Africans need a higher pH which will stress the sharks.

They can however stand up to CA/SA cichlids but none of the bigger ones..anything big = shark bait for the shark (pardon the pun).

What are your water parameters?

Do you know your gH and kH? That would help with suggestion of the cichlids to keep.

Will these be the only other fish in the tank: 4 inch male rainbow shark and a 4 inch female African featherfin catfish?

Also, are you planning on adding any other fish.

These will be going in the 55 gallon tank right?

Will you be doing anything with the 29?

Currently the 55 gallon is cycling so its a blank slate, witch makes me curious as to my full potential of cichlids i could add with everyone being balanced and healthy.

And yes, the rainbow and featherfin will be the only other in the 55g tank.

As far as the 29 gallon goes me and the wife decided to go with a peaceful community.

I've been going crazy with how much contradictory information i have read!!!! i appreciate the help!

You can use filter medium, gravel, plants and ornmanets from the 29 to seed the 55 and help cycle it faster.

I would not add any small substrate (cory's, otto's, etc) fish in the 55 with the Rainbow Shark as it will most likely kill/eat them.

If you could give us the water parameters like pH, gH and kH we can suggest something but without that information we could steer you in the wrong direction.

What fish are you thinking about for the 29?

Not a bad idea, ill definitely try it. The only thing i have planned for the 55 gallon are the shark, catfish and cichlids that will mesh well.

29 gallon i haven't put too much thought in though.

Agree that we need to know the water parameters before making suggestions and to be honest there is not going to be an awful lot of suggestions as the shark is going to cause problems.

The water parameters it needs limits what you can keep. Gourami can be kept with the shark but you would absolutely need a planted tank.
