stringy poop, right diag?
20g tank. ammonia-0, nitrite-0, ph-7.5, gh-5, kh-4, tetra laborett kit. freshwater, 5 weeks old. i have 3 platys, 5 fry. male is adult, had him 5 months. 2 females are half his size, had them 3 weeks. no qt period. temp is now at 88. i have 4 anubias, 1 java fern. filtration is hob topfin 20, aquatech hob 5-15, 1 has sponge, other empty. 1 air bubbler. tank receives no sun. light is on 12-14 hours. water changed last 3 days ago. had been 50% daily before 1 week ago. vacuum gravel every other time. feed omega 1, sun dried shrimp, peas, zucchini, started nls today. twice a day feeding. symptoms- 1 week ago they started glancing and flashing, being lathargic, aggressive, sucking air at filter outlet. i had gotten greedy and added 2 more platys at 4 weeks.its been downhill since. the 2 were aggressive and i returned them. right away the 3 started symptoms. i researched and it sounded like ich. i started with api quick cure 6 days ago. it looks like my tank has started to mature so i cut back on wc's when i started treatment. 3 days ago i raised temp to 88, and started pumping my wifes medical oxygen through my airstones to combat oxy depletion.(its amazing the diff. it makes). at this point 2 platys are fine, the smaller female still glancing. today i fed nls and all 3 pooped, the smaller female pooped stringy segmented. is that something other than ich? was i wrong in thinking ich? please help my poor fish as i am a newbie and they have been through hell. what should i do? also smaller female is clamping fins
hi gwen. i did a lot of research on ich and from what i saw the spots are an advanced symptom. the glancing and low oxygen are what happens at first. everything they were doing says ich except the stringy poop. i read that could be internal parasites or constipation. and it only happened on day 5 of treatment. ich cant breed at temps over 85. with the elevated temp its just a matter of time till all of ich dies, usually about 4-6 days. and since with the extra oxygen, they couldnt care less about the heat so ill run it for 10 days. the poop caught me off guard . and since it came after i fed nls for the first time i hope its normal. my tank has finally cycled!!! and they deserve some easy time. and with that, hows the weather in new mexico? its beautiful country from what ive seen. have you been to roswell?
It's not that ich can't develop in higher temps, it speeds up it's life cycle and you can only kill ich when it's free swimming, and not on a host. I guess I didn't understand if you actually had ich, but it sounds like you know you do. I've read there is something that causes the stringy poop, so I'd do some checking on that, but you may want to also get the ich treatment done, observe and go from there.
I've been to Roswell, not very exciting IMO. The weather here is beautiful today. Clear blue skies and temps not too hot!
i see. thanks for helping. its hard to get help sometimes. i will continue to research and observe til i get it right. roswell and area 51 have always made me wonder. good day. happy memorial day. btw im not 100% sure im just playing the odds and hoping.
