I just recently bought a 100 gal. tank to move my saltwater critters into from a 55 gal. I dont want to stress them too much so what would be the best way of moving everyone. I have 2 tangs, 2 clowns, and 10 damsels, and a bunch of inverts, but Im not too worried about them, they are a little more hardy than my fish. I was thinking of setting it up for a few weeks then acclimating them like I would normally OR fill it a little more than half way with fresh saltwater and using some of my old saltwater to fill it then acc. but that would have to be in one day. I dont know if anyone has done this or knows of a better way, if so then please let me know! Oh and I have well water and someone told me that I may have too much iron in my water, are there specific tests for iron???
"seeding" the tank would be good. switch an older filter pad if you have any (depending on filters) and switch them with a new one in the new tank and if you have any live rock throw some of that into the tank and let it sit for awhile. that should get the cycling process going. after its done cycling move just a couple fish over at a time acclimating them of course.
If you can fill the tank and leave it run for 2 months before moving hte fish all the better. Stock it with fresh aragonite and slowly move your existing rock to the new tank. Everything should be fine if you take a few weeks to move it all. Each new piece of rock will create a mini cycle that will last 3 or so days. Allow the copepods plenty of time to get established before moving the residents in and your tank will be great. Donate your old substrate to a new reefer, don't put it in the 100 if possible.
Of course you could rinse it really well and use it in the 100 if you can't affors all new sand. But make sure to get the new sand bed up and running before doing so.
