would these fish be ok together??
8 tiger barbs
2 convict cichlids
1 rainbow shark
in a 55 gallon
As in 2 convict cichlids, do you mean a pair? That is a huge no. A male female pair are probably some of the most aggressive things I've seen- my old pair ripped apart and killed an 8" pleco. I really wouldn't keep them with any other fish except possibly other high aggression cichlids (I'm no expert on them!). They are pretty much that stereotype fish that everyone buys and it just takes over the whole tank.
I would consider getting more tiger barbs though. A school of them is quite amazing!
Oh ok. ill get 12 tigers. what would be good to put with them?
Piping up to say that the Rainbow Shark isn't the best thing to put with those Tiger Barbs. Rainbow Sharks are big bullies. You put them in with fish smaller than they are known to chase the smaller fish to death.
The shark gets to 6 inches, the barbs to 3 inches. That's all the input I can provide.
Yea, wasn't too sure on the shark but I was suspicious of it too.
What are your pH and hardness?
I'm no tiger barb expert, I just know they are decently peaceful in large groups (12 is a good number). You have room for more fish in there, just not sure what.

As noted in the profile of the Tiger Barb and the Rainbow Shark [click on the shaded name to see the profile] both these fish should be OK in a 4-foot 55g tank with other medium, peaceful barbs, larger rasbora, and danio. If you go with the TB, increasing the group to say 11 might be better.
Substrate fish should be avoided with the shark, sometimes it will tolerate some loaches, other fish will not. Certainly it should never be comined with other so-called "shark" species.
Always check the profiles first, you will often find the answer to your questions.;-)
