Identify the Mystery Fish!
When I bought my school of Bleeding Heart Tetra, this little guy ended up with them. I have no idea what it is, despite spending hours scouring over images of Tetra, Pencilfish, etc. The closest I've come to identifying it is a Blue Tetra, but they lack the red gill plates.
It's quite small, but larger than a Cardinal or Neon. Very fast swimmer, and not timid/shy at all. The pectoral fins, which are transparent also point upward, rather than outward like the Tetra. At night, the body goes almost transparent, save for a tiny light blue lateral line mid-body, and red gill plates. During the day, it goes a darker blue-grey. The top of the eyes are turquoise (unlike the Blue Tetra, which are yellow).
It also seems to enjoy nibbling on the blanched spinach I put in for the Otos, but leaves the actual live plants alone.
Any ideas what it is? I'd like to get it some schooling buddies.
It's a species of blue eyed rainbows.
I believe you may be correct, fine sir. Especially judging from the shape of the mouth and snout region. I can't find a pic identical to this little one, but according to the articles out there, this would be a female. :-)
The double dorsal fin is a dead give away ;)
It's most likely a celebes.
It's not a Celebs. I just got back from Big Al's, where I asked about it. It is a Rainbow, but he named off another kind. They're out of stock of that kind, but assured me this little girl would be happy schooling with Celebs, so I bought 6. :-)
Just a quick update: I introduced the solo Rainbow to her new group of Celebs, and she calmed down immediately and schooled with them. What a nice end for this poor little stressed out fish. 8-)
she is a female rainbow celebes.i have a bunch of them in my tank.the males have beautiful finage but the colors aren't very bright.
