Mine is about two feet deep, and ive never lost a fish.

If you want plants, then 2 feet is about the limit. You might could stretch to 2.5 feet, but you might want shelves to place the plants on.

Theoretically, I guess you could make it as deep as you like, and just use bricks to keep the plants within 1-2 feet of the surface, and the fish could hide between them.

You also have to think about a place to house your fish in the winter! That is of course if your winters get cold. Mine do, and two feet isn't deep enough to winter fish.
