a plant or two wont complete the nitrogen cycle, well it will but many many plants are needed for it to work.
aerators are commonly mistaken for adding oxygen to the water. all they do is simply allow gas exchange by disrupting the surface of the water letting bad gases escape. i would imagine with a frozen surface this does little to nothing, but i dont keep pond fish so im not 100%
