pond potential and types of cement...

This is another pipe dream -

In my parents' backyard they also have a dry fountain with a rectangular pool that hasn't held water in over a decade - would hold about 100 gallons of water. My fantasy is to try to turn it into a white mountain minnow/mosquito fish pond.

My main concern about it is that the pool has a ceramic tiled bottom, and I don't know what kind of sealant/cement was used to put the tiles in place - i.e. if it contains toxic compounds that might leech into the water and kill the fish?

Is there any (relatively easy) way to check this out?

Thanks!

Jonathan
