RIP Oscar

I had to put down a dog for the very first time today. Oscar was a purebred beagle my family rescued from some people who had abandoned him. Over the summer, he somehow managed to eat a bunch of coins that were in his stomach for a good deal of time. He had to be hospitalized and managed to throw up the coins, but he never fully recovered. He had been in and out of the hospital since then but catastrophic damage had been done to his liver and kidneys. He stopped eating and lost a ton of weight. Eventually permanent hospitalization wasn't even enough to keep him alive. The vet wanted to do exploratory surgery as she was certain there was something else causing the problem in addition to the coins he had eaten, but he was so weak she knew he wouldn't have made it through the operation. He was in a lot of pain, so we thought it was the best decision. He had just turned six.

Oscar was a really goofy little dog. I was actually overseas when my family adopted him, so at first I wrote him off as "my replacement." He had a really curious personality and loved messing with our other dog, Brownie. He really grew on me. I loved him and he'll be dearly missed.

So sorry to hear about your loss. It's always hard to lose a family pet. Oscar sounds like he had quite a personality.

I know how hard making that final decision can be.
You gave him the best of care and I'm certain he knew he was loved.
I can only imagine how much you'll miss him....Brownie too.
