So... I am well aware that my 3 Butterfly Koi will eventually outgrow my pond, but I am going to donate them to a lovely local Japanese garden that has a several-acre lake with Koi already in it.
That aside, my 100g pond has 3 Butterfly Koi, 2 Shubunkin Goldfish, Lily pads, and Dwarf Cat tails. The cat tails are just now coming out of the root ball, and some of the Lilys are rotting (we bought the plant live from a pond store, it has lots of new growth but they are not at the surface yet.) The dark green lily pad with the white flower is fake, LOL. We are going to re-arrange the rocks to cover the plastic edges, and going to get a bigger capacity pump for the waterfall. (It has a 700 gph now, planning a 1400-1500 gph) The plants in the garden around it are different varieties of Hosta, ornamental grasses, and a Japanese Maple in the back corner for another focal point. We have done tons of work to this pond but like everything else its still a work in progress.
this is awesome!!! i'd love to do something like this, but i'm renting but as soon as we have some extra change and a house to call our own i'm gonna put up my pond
gosh, first of all let me get over the shock of the size of your garden:shock: it's beautiful,
and i'm insainly jealous lol.
you have the same mushroom head on your pump as me :-D
your pond is really beautiful,i'm surprised you didn't make it bigger ?
but it's still beautiful,i really love the large stones the fit in really well.
my camra is broken at the moment, and i've only got pictures on my phone, waiting to
be uploaded, then i can show you my little pond.
Thanks Willow!!!! We didn't make it bigger because it is a plastic pre-form. Hubs bought it off craigslist at the end of last summer. We got all the slate and rocks from a local rock/landscape place. The pond came with the Koi and the filter with the mushroom head on it. We added the Shubunkins and the other filter box attached to the waterfall pump, and finally got some plants in it. My swing on the deck is right near it. Its lovely
Looks great! I especially like all the Hostas behind the waterfall with the Japanese Maple. Will look real nice once the maple grows a bit more. Good job.
Thanks!!! I planted the Maple 2 years ago when this was a pondless waterfall. My next door neighbor had an enormous Oak that he cut down last year. Before he cut it the Maple was not getting much sun. Its grown more this year than the last 2 combined! All those hostas came from one hosta that was planted here in the back yard when we first bought the house 4 years ago. Its since been split several times and spawned into at least 12 ENORMOUS plants! All thanks to getting free aged manure from a local stable...ROFL!!
That looks great. Nice job. Our next home I want to have a small outdoor pond or water feature.
Ashley you should get a tub at Walmart only $5.98 each and do a small tub pond. Mine is a unfiltered tub pond and they are great for apt. if you have a balcony to have it. Look under unfiltered tub pond by Tankmaster in this forum. Here is a picture of mine this year and the picture of it last year with a water fountain inside. I take it down every fall and put it up in the late spring.
I think a tub pond would only be good for a balcony as small children could fall into it if it is outside your apt. door unless you have an enclosed entry in the front.
I should have got more pics when my lily pads were in bloom. They had lovely white flowers!! Its getting cold here now, and I'm feeding fall wheat germ pellets. The pads have gone dormant and my plants around the pond are dying/going dormant, so more pics of mine wouldn't be that pretty right now.
My pond 7'x12' and between 1 1/2'-2 1/4' deep. And it is way way tooo small. I am in a area that might freeze the top two inches on a hard freeze. I am hoping, praying and wishing I will be able to get the 8'x16xmin 3' deep pond in place. Around two winters ago I was so happy we had pond. The power was out for almost a week and we have a well. We were able to use the pond water as gray water and use the toilets.
Back to size. Even if you built the pond the size of a swiming pool, after time it will seem small and want and even bigger pond.
With fish in a shallow pond, put some netting over it. You might not see the large birds around but they will see those fish. I know by experince.
Not sure if your state has one but JoAnn's Fabric sales 100% Nylon netting by the yard
