Is he quite tame? Do you have to work at handling them or are the captive bred ones not that wary of humans?

Thanks Julie, I love the wee guy to bits! He was far from tame when I first got him, and wouldn't tolerate being handled at all. I was very wary about picking him up, as I didn't want to stress him in case he dropped his tail.

Last week I had no choice though, as he hadn't shed proplery. He squirmed a lot when I was removing the dead skin, and bit me at one point. Since them, I have been taking him out every other day for five minutes to get him used to handling. He won't sit on my hand outside of the tank yet, and I have to keep quite a firm grip on him to prevent him from running away. He feeds from my hand inside the tank now though, and when I put my hand in with a mealworm on it, he will climb on and quite happily sit there munching! :D

That's gret that he's getting much more comfortable with you. Graduation is in June, whe hopefully I will find somebody to start paying me for working - it will be a pleasant change!

Anyway I always figured I would want another tank when I graduated and had more money, but I'm leaning much more towards a Charlie now (don't tell Lupin)!

What size of "tank" do you keep him in?

Sorry for all the questions.

Hi Julie - ask away! I could happily talk about him all day. I have him housed in a 2 foot tank. I was originally going to house him in an old fish tank, but access would only have been through the top, and the ventilation wasn't sufficient.

There are some really nice wooden terrariums available, with glass doors at the front which I'm eventually going to get. A two foot tank is big enough to keep a single leo in, but I'd still like to upgrade eventually and give him some more space.

If you're thinking of getting one after you graduate, why not make me wildly jealous and get a breeding pair instead? :D

I just had to post this.. the clearest full length shot I've managed to get. This is Charlie in a bucket while I was cleaning his tank out.

Errr... I'm not actually 100 percent sure Lainey.

I've looked up how to sex them, but haven't managed to turn him over for a proper look yet.

I might consider it, but maybe I'd be best getting one to start with. Though I guess looking after 2 wouldn't be much more difficult than looking after one...hmm. You're just giving me ideas. :D

Hi Julie, he's doing very well thanks for asking!

He feeds twice a day now, very early morning and late at night. He's around eight inches or so in length and sheds his skin every 2 - 3 weeks.
There was some trouble with him shedding to begin with, but the last three or four have been perfect.

He has become a lot more tame, and regularly feeds from my hand. The only problem in doing that is that he sometimes misjudges when taking worms and bites my fingers instead.

He loves climbing around his tank and exploring, and sits on the ledge at the front looking out. The only thing is that he is very camera shy. Usually when I go anywhere near the tank with the camera he makes a hasty retreat into his moist box hide.

Eaurghhhh... just remembered I promised you a picture of the ledge I made. I'll send it to you after work... if I forget this time please remind me!

Are you still planning on getting one after the summer? :)
