I was going to quote the whole Chesh book and reply to everyone for the world's longest ever post, but I halfway certain there is a length limit like with PMs. I'm still tempted to try.

Mod helper-I always love your excitement, that's why you're the helper! It sure isn't because of your ability to actually select which ones to buy. :P

You were absolutely right that I have three spathes at the moment. Which is soooo cool. None of the plants have two though, those are new leaves that you're seeing.

I don't treat the water in the emersed tank at all. EI modified water is basically water from the water change of my high tech tank. That gets dosed with KNO3, K2PO4, GH Booster, and Plantex CSM+B. I'm wondering if that is the best option though and might just get some liquid fert. I did test the water for you. .5 ammonia and no nitrates. As you'd imagine with my tapwater being as acidic as it is (for anyone that doesn't know my tanks test at 6.0 since that's all the lower the test goes. The tap is about 6.4) and then with peat, test over 7.0. Yeah someone else can figure that one out.

Even when it was hot here, when the lights went out the humidity in the terrarium would rise as the temp dropped. I'd love to give you a scientific reasoning, but I'm lazy. I liken it to dew on the grass in the morning, if that makes sense.

The names so annoy me! I spend actual time looking for if the Buce I want to buy has a somewhat legit (as legit as they can be name) or if someone made it up! It doesn't help they have multiple names. Some are easy like green skeleton king is green Achilles, black skeleton king is dark Achilles. Some people say kedagang is lamandau, but then others have dark kedagang and lamandau purpler and lamandau green in there collection. Plus there might be a kedagang mini (for real), lamandau purple mini, and lamandau green mini. I've also heard old kedagang, which I think is to differentiate it from kedagang round. *bangs head into desk*

I think you nailed most of the brownies. You left out brownie pixy. Everyone else there's also a pixy. *bangs head again* I heard that story about brownie ghost, but don't know if I believe it. Sherry might also be upper ghost, since it was found in the same stream, but further upstream.

Agent13- Don't be a size queen! The smaller ones are nice too. :p

Izzy-Nope that was a leaf. Would you mind telling everyone what to look out for while QTing? I have melting, but that's a Buce/Crypt thing. I think I'll be lucky if I don't lose my brownie ghost. Usually even if the leaves die, the rhizome is fine, not this time.

No plans to pollinate. Interesting idea, although I have no clue how to even go about it or raising the seeds. I've never seen anyone talking about it.

Willow-Awesome show. It's on FX here in the states, but wikipedia said it's on Fox over there ;)

Bekah and John-Thanks for the compliments!

Kitty-A macro shot?!? I'm lucky to get those I think. My camera is a Polaroid i533. Someone tell me what a bad camera that possibly is.

DQ-I know you were joking, but this does take a bunch of time. Not including all the hours I had to work to pay for them all. lol

Here's the definition from Wikipedia. "A spathe is a large bract that forms a sheath to enclose the flower cluster of certain plants such as palms, arums, and dayflowers. In many arums (Araceae family), the spathe is petal-like, attracting pollinators to the flowers arranged on a type of spike called a spadix." Think calla lily or peace lily. For aquarists think Anubias and Cryptocorynes.

MattsBettas-Appreciate the comments. You seriously read through all my widely meandering ramblings though? lol Kind of feel sorry for all that.

Yea, read the whole thing. I found it interesting and had time to waste (not that it was a waste of time!).

I think you should try pollinating them. Why not?

Tried to look up anything I could about pollinating Bucephalandra and have come up with nothing. I'll keep trying though.

Jes wanted pictures of tanks. I tried and they suck. I'm trying to build a rep as a good picture taker. So to distract her from the tanks I decided on more random Buce pics. I might as well post them here.

Mentarang kal-timur spathe

Brownie yellow. New leaves on both plants. It's doing well.

Not as good of a pic (Gah! I really am an art snob now! *thinks science thoughts*). Brownie red with a new leaf on the bottom. It's nice and red.

Brownie jade. This is one big plant, but you can see three new leaves about to open. The last three pictures are the newest plants that have adapted perfectly. No lost leaves, growing already.

At the opposite end of the newbie spectrum we have brownie ghost. This was the plant I was most excited about of the new plants. I don't have high hopes. Check out the brown rhizome, both hunks. I'm down to three tiny sideshoots that I doubt will live. This has been moved to the big terrarium in the hopes that more light will do it good. Instead of us holding our breath for it, let's write it's obit. Best I can come up with is "brownie ghost gave up the ghost". Anyone got me beat? If you're really curious, that's a $25 plant (without shipping) dying on me.

Golden bell to show how all those sideshoots are doing.

Kedagang for the same reason as the golden bell. This is said to be one of the fastest growers. Not complaining but only sideshoot growth so far.

Centipede 2. This one has issues with browning leaves like that since I got it. I'm not concerned though as it is otherwise growing nicely. Much fuller than when I got it.

Bukit biru. This was another that died all the way back to the rhizome and is returning. Mostly I just wanted to show the new leaves are red. There's actually more color in the tank than I think you guys realize. Not like submerged, but still. Kir Royale throws red leaves too. I'll get a pic in a few days if anyone wants.

Theia brown. I wanted to try and show off the green leaves with red veining that it has. Hoping you can see it. That BGA is really ugly. I tried lowering the water level to be rid of it. I'm wondering if having MGOCPM mixed with the peat was part of the problem. Too many nutrients.

Personally I think all this practice has done me some good. I can take decent pics now. The ones back on page one are just sad.

new pics!!!

Why don't you try researchig pollunation of another spathe producing plant? like peace lillies and such. Anubias might get you closer results :)

Sorry to see the brownie ghost fading away :( we'll be rootingfor him to come back to life!!!!

I think the plants that are only producing sideshoots are segments taken from the middle of a larger rhizome, (Ie, the newer leaves are on another cutting)

I do hope your plants can recover! Adjusting can be hard on the little guys.

As for plant QT, there are a couple key things to look for: bugs and fungus. There are a bunch of bugs that can attack plants like mealybugs, spider mites, and scale. All of those are pretty hard to get rid of. But the best way to get rid of them is contain the infection to just a couple of plants (ie. QT). The fungus is another thing to look out for. Often times this manifests itself as brown spots on leaves. The length of time for QT depends on a lot of things. From a nursery or a grower known to have buggy plants, 3 months isn't unheard of. Nurseries are prone to having infected plants. From a trusted grower, a month is pretty normal. Of course, this goes for terrestrial plants. Has anyone ever heard of an aquatic plant getting infected?
