We talked about having one a while back but decided against it. In my experience, systems like that tend to get abused. "Popular" forum members end up with a lot of points while unpopular ones get voted down or get less points. As a result, people might give more credence to the popular member over the unpopular one instead of considering the actual advice being given. Granted, that might already be an issue with post count, but as it is it's less likely to be abused, I think.

I do kind of like the idea of having custom user titles. I'll bring it up with the other members of staff and see what they think.

I was too. I thought it was some high number of posts to be a senior member. And then I was one and was like "Whaaaaattttt????" lol

Or maybe there should be another title that people are nominated to or promoted to by the moderators, like "fish doctor" or something, that can be given if that member displays a high level of knowledge?

I would keep it amongst the mods, though, to bestow that title, and make sure the person wants it first.

I think I saw on another forum where one of their mods had the title of "fish medical team member" or something like that.

I think that would be really useful. That way people know who can help them the best. Although it might cause some discrimination against those who don't have the title, and also, you have to trust the mods to nominate people based on experience and not on popularity.

I'm not so sure I really like that idea. For one thing, (not to slight the other mods or put myself down) but the mods here aren't chosen based solely on their knowledge of the hobby (actually, I'd say it's one of the least important considerations) so I don't think it's fair for the staff to have the final word in who is labeled as an expert. More importantly, if one particular member is labeled as an expert in some particular field, her opinion on whatever subject will always carry more weight than that of a "regular" member. I don't really think that's fair and I think it's better for people to consider the advice being given rather than the person giving it.

Has my vote. Can only speak for myself.

I agree with Jim. It's a good idea, FuulieQ, but I would prefer to see members' posts/reputations speak for themselves. It would be a shame if a few members were designated a "fish doctor" or something similar and the good advice of others was ignored.

You guys may have noticed that your "titles" have changed. We've reworked the post count/status correlations to make it more difficult to achieve senior member status... and beyond.
