Spore is made by Will Wright & Maxis, the people behind all of the Sims games. Wright wanted to call the game "Sim Everything."

Basically, it's an...everything...simulator.

The game is divided into phases:

Phase 1: You control a single-celled organism and you must survive in the primordial ooze. You must eat food and avoid getting eaten yourself, while spending DNA points on new adaptations.

Phase 2: You grow legs, crawl up onto land, and continue your fight for survival. You also have to reproduce.

Phase 3: You stop evolving physically, and your creatures form tribes. They become intelligent and develop language, tools, domestication, etc etc.

Phase 4: Your tribe becomes an advanced civilization. You must conquer your planet through either diplomacy or warfare.

Phase 5: You can explore the galaxy with spacecraft, colonize new worlds, and conquer the galaxy.

Throughout the whole game, you make choices such as whether to be herbivorous, omnivorous or carnivorous or whether your creatures are peaceful or warlike. The game's content changes based on how you play. Other creatures/civilizations you encounter are mostly the creations of other people playing the game.

Thanks iamntbatman. I've never tried any of the Sims games but this really sounds like it might be worth a shot. I'm going to download and give it a shot on Sunday :)

Just go to spore.com and download the Creature Creator. I wouldn't waste money on the "real" version of it, as it will be included with the full game. I got the free trial version and it's really fun!

Honestly, I pirated the leaked version 4 days before it was supposed to come out, I had every intention of paying for it, but was vastly disseminated when I "beat" it in less than 10 hours. Is the updates and player content worth it or should I just skip it like I had intended after beating the leaked version?

If you didn't like it, I wouldn't spend your money. I was honestly pretty disappointed in how shallow the cell, creature, tribal and civilization phases were, but the space phase is pretty deep and I have fun with it. The user-created content is definitely more interesting than the Maxis stuff, but sometimes it's hard to tell the difference.
