Question for the younger posters... a mini-rant

Do they still teach grammar in school?

There are sometimes (on here and other places) where I have such a hard time reading people's posts! I'm only 19 so its not like I'm a grumpy old lady who doesn't like slang, but golly a couple periods here an there and a spell check wouldn't hurt anyone.

Example:

its very hard for me to read posts that have no periods or punctuations it makes it very hard to know where one sentence starts and another begins especaly posts that are very long and full of badlee mispelllled wordzzzz i try to do my best to make my posts readable but i know everyone makes a mishapp every once in a while but this is rediculouz!

Is it just because this is a public forum or is that how people actually write nowadays?

I hope I'm not the only one who is annoyed by stuff like this. I'm a grammar freak and having to decipher posts grinds my gears LOL

lol thats understandable. I can read slang well due to the fact that i get many txt messages which of course have bad grammar because they are txting fast XD. I usually have good grammar when typing an essay for my professor but i guess in a place where i dont get graded, i may let loose per say =)

Oh dear. I'm totally with you on this one, 1fish2fish. Not only is it annoying and time consuming to decipher the post, (usually I just skip over and don't even bother responding), but in my opinion, it makes the person look extremely unintelligent. No offense, but if you want to be taken seriously, at least put effort to type complete sentences with basic spelling.

/end rant. :D

I doubt that it is age specific but, I know what you mean. My real estate agent (age 46) sends me text messages all the time, and I have no idea what they mean. I have a full keyboard on my phone, so I use it. She has a full keyboard but she sends me stuff like "cye, cml" or "ggbbl, 6?" I text her back "try spanish or latin, I can work backwards from there."

I also notice the postings on craigslist, message boards, or other places. I'm 29, went to a school where my graduating class was 12, we got extra credit for participating in Rodeo or pot luck dinners. Girls took home ec.; boys took welding. We wore the same clothes everyday and drove trucks to school starting at about age 14. You can't get any more backwoods than that. BUT I can write a sentence and use spell check. If a poor friggin' school in the middle of nowhere can do it, anyone can. This leads me to believe people choose to write poorly and look ignorant out of sheer laziness or an over abundant sense of entitlement.

Or maybe people just do it to annoy those of us who enjoy reading. ;)

Haha.. craigslist is one of the main reasons behind my rant. I've been searching for tanks for months and I can't stand some of the posts (and the email responses I get!).

As far as texting.. I have a full keyboard and use it. My texts are usually long winded because I don't know any "txt speech".. and I don't particularly care to learn ;)

Edit: I have to watch myself on papers sometimes.. I find myself throwing LOL's and gonna's .. stuff like that in. But thats what spell check and proof reading are for LOL
