I was really dumb one afternoon and bought a pleco from Petsmart. Tanks looked good. The next day my Cardinal Tetras brokeout in Ich, and died that night. My hatchet fish school died the next day. My school of rasboras survived.

I went to Petsmart the next day and confirmed where it came from(the ich). The manager did not even know what it was. I had to tell him, then tell him in was in several other tanks. There was a clown loach covered in spots gulping at the top of the tank.

I lost 11 fish in 1.5 days. The manager did his best to make me happy. He comped at new filter for my upgraded tank, but it always hurts when you lose fish, especially when you've had them for a while. Anyway i learned my lesson i'll only buy fish from Worlds Under Water my LFS.

Is Petsmart bad about sick fish? I have been to 2 in Texas. My "local" Petsmart (55 minutes away) has fish that are always in excellent condition (major exception to bettas). I have only seen one dead fish there, it was a goldfish that jumped on to some plants at the top of the water. He sufficated . But I wouldn't really blame the store for that (unless that hadn't been the first time).

Everytime I go to a petstore, I immediately check all the fish for diesases. I don't shop at the ones that carry any number of sick fish. But my "local" Petsmart is a well kept store. I guess maybe the employees vary from store to store?

I have to admit that around here in Texas, petsmart seems to be better than most pet/ fish stores around here

I just remembered another one!

I went to my independant lfs and saw some female bettas. At the time I didn't know how big they got. I ask the manager how big they get and the manager held its hands about 12" apart and said (excact words),"They get pretty big, dear" "You can't keep one of these in your 10g, dear, you have to have at least a 20g." I knew better than that, but I still didn't know how big they got so I avoided the urge to get one (thank goodness).

Does anyone else hate it when your fish store employee nets the fish while they are talking to you, and then after they catch the fish, they hold it above water for about 10 seconds while they are trying to finish there sentence? (long sentence.)
