Science lesson of the day: "true" calico patterns are only observed on female cats.* The reason for this is that those particular colors are X-chromosome linked traits. Female cats have two X-chromosomes (one from their father and one from their mother). If the color associated with each of these X-chromosomes is different, what happens is basically that 50% of the cat's cells pick one color and 50% pick the other. This differentiation happens very early on in development so, instead of being a shade between the two (with the hair colors distributed at random) you get fairly large areas with one color or the other.
*The only time "male" cats ever have calico coloration is when they have two X-chromosomes and one Y-chromosome.
