Actually...military scientists have come up with a suit kind of like this. Gives "superstrength" and I think it can take a few hits but I'm pretty sure they haven't put that NIFTY targeting system in there or made it fly. They're still working on the battery thing.

Interesting how they throw a much darker view of the war in there, the treason so that the weapons manufacturers can keep the war going and the money coming in.

That dark view of war was already a part of Iron Man canon. In the original origin story, pretty much the same thing happened as in the movie, only it took place in Vietnam during the Vietnam War rather than in current-day Afghanistan. I thought they did a great job of bringing the story up to date without messing with the important aspects of the plot.
