I'm a middle school teacher, so I have the summers off. It's usually pretty hard to find a summer job because the college kids take them all :-p I'm hoping to work full time in the summer and a few nights a week in the fall. Plus, our schools have cut tons of positions. This way, if my position gets cut, I'll have a job that I can fall back on and hopefully go to full time.
But, since I love animals (and volunteered/worked at our local animal shelter for 7 years before college) I figured I might as well apply for something having to do with animals. So I filled out an online Petco application yesterday and got a call back today!
Some background: When I became interested in bettas around Christmas time, I went to Petco to buy one. I was appalled at the number of dead and sick fish that were there, as well as one of the employee's carefree attitude about them, and wrote a letter to corporate regarding this. The letter was nice, but to the point, saying I would not shop, nor encourage anyone to shop there unless the care improved. Well, I got a call from the manager personally and she explained that she would take care of that employee and also that they had problems with the vendor and the majority of the fish had died from that shipment. She apologized and encouraged me to come back when a new shipment came in. Well, long story short, I go in weekly now, the care has been almost perfect (the best out of any of our large or small local pet stores) and the employees great. I have not seen the bad employee since. The fish manager even used to breed bettas!
So I'll be going to an interview on Tuesday at 6:30 pm with the same manager I spoke to about the bettas. I have talked to her several times since and she always says hi when I come in. I'm not sure if she'll be happy that she'll be interviewing me or annoyed! But at least she knows that I care about animals!
I usually don't like supporting the larger stores if local stores sell similar things, but I can't ignore good care and/or good customer service when I see it. Plus, if I get the job I can advocate for proper care of bettas when customers ask me questions :)
Wish me luck!!
