I do think the swine flu may very well become a Pandemic (SHould add I am an ER nurse with a Masters in Public Health). But I dont think its going to create mass death. SO far the infections in the US and Europe have been described as mild. (though I am sure the people feel horrid with it.). But with the way people are traveling these days, cases are going to spread and spread. the only confirmed death in the US though was a child visitng from Mexico who had several underlying health issues making her more susceptible to the disease.
Things like this do mutate in nature, the flu virus mutates so many times, which is why the flu vacciene sometimes doesnt get it right.
Common sense really needs to prevail. There is no point to seal a border to an infection that is already present in the US. People need to stay home when ill, wash hands and be alert to others who are trying to sneeze all over you.
As it is, we already give free health care in America, I treat a ton of people each and every day who have no intention whatsoever of paying a bill for medical services they recieve. And these are generally the people who arrive at the Emergency room for a cough for one day, dental pain, or a variety of other really non emergent/urgent problems. Becuase of the laws we have from the 80's we have to evaluate and treat every person who walks in the door thinking they have an emergency regardless of their ability to pay. So as far as socialized medicine, its been here for years, just under a different guise...
