I think fishkeeping is one of those hobbies that just isnt for some people. Lots of people will see a nice tank with colorful fish and say "wow thats neat" but when it comes to the intricacies of having to figure out water chemistry, feeding on time, water changes, etc. People start to lose interest. Then there are other people, like us on this forum, who will sit down and relearn basic chemistry and set up a feeding schedule and even some who will devise DIY filters and tools to keep our tanks and fish healthy. I think its just the way it is.
Skip the details and just let him enjoy the aesthetics of having a nice tank. Eventually, hopefully, he will grow into it, and maybe get more involved, but dousing him in fish information and concerns is probably not an effective means to spark his interest.
