Hey I live in Nebraska too :D lol thought I was the only one. Anyways back on topic I have cousins in California that have seen black widows too. My aunt and cousin told me not to long ago they were at the playground at their church and a black widow was on the equipment. My cousin got her little brothers out of there with all the other little kids and got that spider squished.

I find about a dozen every year in my yard. They are usually in the wood pile and I know to be careful whem I'm in that area. The B/F screams, "Black Widow!" and then I come squish them. He hates (and is afraid of) spiders.

If you don't stand up for something you'll fall for anything...

I killed two last year. I haven't seen one this year, yet. Black widows are so small, though.

They aren't always small. Last year after cleaning out the stuff from my garden I caught one in a jar that had about a one inch body! She was HUGE and full of eggs. After putting her in the jar, over night she made a big egg sack {she trimmed down greatly after that} My son took her to school to show everyone. Then I kept thinking about all of those "baby" spiders crawling around and squished her and her egg sack!

My Betta's: Bonnie - Peep - Singer - Cheep - Hummer - Chirp - Tweet
Buster - Roscoe - Jack

We get them here in NJ too. I've never seen one in my area but my Mom lived in South Jersey and I found one under a garden ornament. She was big, like the one newfishmom found. My Mom was much happier NOT knowing there were Black Widows in her yard. Now she's in FL where the spiders are CRAZY big.

Kymmie, that cracked me up, "screaming like a sissy girl".

16 Gallon-4 Corys, 3 Endler's, 5 Celestial Pearl Danios
10 Gallon: Male King Betta-Kilo
5 Gallon: Male Marble HM-Logan
5 Gallon: Dwarf Puffer-Huey
5 Gallon: Male VT-Tango

Had the Black Widow that crawled on my hand been as big as the one newfishmom found I would have been screaming like a sissy boy! A one inch black widow?? Eeeekkkk!

I almost shed a tear for all the poor little black widows (and babies! oh no!) murdered.

I found a brown recluse carrying young in my garage....
I *carefully* trapped it and carried it down the street to let it go. Unfortunately when I touched the mother all of the babies ran around... Now they kind of creeped me out- I let them keep the jar....
dropped it and left quickly. (man talk for I ran...)

Sometimes I think I should have been born a buddhist. I refuse to kill anything- if I see a worm on the sidewalk or a bug in the middle of a parking lot I carry it to a safe place to drop it.

Man talk for "I ran"?
I respect the Buddhist philosophy but NOT when it comes to the Brown Recluse. Those can kill me!
I carry caterpillars and tiny spiders to safey but I would squish the recluse without thinking twice!
