ok well lets start at the begining shall we? 1st most fish stores are by necessity a business first so of course they will tell you it will be expensive and attempt to sell you all sorts of things that are "needed".... this is only partially true, yes salt water is high cost and can get very very daunting if you try to do it all at once.. that said there are so many projects that you can do slower and often DIY that you can cut the cost in half with some research and a bit of time shopping around for items that will serve the purpose you desire.... for example my LFS sells a light that costs about $200 USD i made a hood with 2x 6500 dayligh bulbs and 1x 10k bulb for under $60 USD granted it took a bit of time and a lot of effort but to me doing these things is more rewarding and a lot more cost effective... moving on to sand and rock again utilizing patience i was able to get 45 pounds of base rock for $40 USD and then bought 10 pounds to seed it at commercial rate and traded for a bit more....

this can be an incredible project and you will find the adventure truly addictive opps i mean interesting but remember do not always take your LFS at their word even great fish stores need to pay their bills and make sales..
