really!?!?!?! i grabbed up 6 BIG snails and a few hermits for like $12-15... i have 6 snails and 5 hermits - some say dont use hermits at all but they have been fine in mine......again super cheep though if you get "less than recommended" it just takes a little longer for them to clean things up but its cool.....

in my experience nothing!!! other have had then knock stuff around the tank and pick at corals... mine have been fine so i personally have no issue with them... as for the package clean up crews again i personally think they give you a bit much and i have used much smaller numbers than recommended with no issues.... another bonus is that i got to pick each member of my CUC so i knew they were healthy and active at the time of purchase...

the hermit will kill and eat the snail, might not happen right away but may in time. i found they must love to do this as i put MANY empty shells in my tank too. this is why i personally keep my tanks crab free.

i should have went into alittle more detail for anyone reading.

i have found they like to kill the snails for their shells... and in some cases find that shell doesnt fit them well so they move onto the next one.

i also keep my crabs tank free because of their "picky" behaviors. a crab is an opportunistic eater. whatever it can get its hands on to eat, it will. this is why we can go crabbing with chicken as bait. you'd never find a chicken in the ocean but the crabs dont mind when the opportunity comes. some are better then others but for the most part ( atleast for me, in my tanks ) no thank you.
emerald crabs arnt that bad, but it doesnt really mean theyre safe. a general guide is if they have sharp claws, theyre more of a meat eater and spoon like claws more of algaes. but again for me, no thank you.
for any livestock, what goes in today may not be safe tom. so well planning a stocking list is your best bet. what to add and in what order to add it. just my $.02

actually i heard that about the hermit crabs....that if you dont have empty shells they will eat a snail n take there shell or w/e.....i just figured if there was a drastic size diff. it wouldnt happen....oh well ima play it safe no hermits i guess...but i really want emerald for my bubble algae :D

i didnt mean to turn you off of hermits, some people love them. i personally however save myself the trouble.. thats my opinion.

now heres my take on getting emeralds for them to strictly eat bubble algae.. this prob. wont work. for starters they may or may not touch it.. esp if a tastier food is available. if they are eating it they are popping it, releasing its spores which you can prob. do a better job at manually. more spores would mean more algae..
an emerald makes a nice addition if you like crabs ( again they may eat whatever they please ) so go for it if you want to give it a shot, but me personally.. i still dont like crabs. i mean i like crabs, just not in my reef tank. any hitching crab i put into my refuge and even sometimes i give those away to local reefing buddies. some can be pretty nasty.

take a closer look at how much/what your feeding, where your source water comes from and your nitrates. if you take away the excess nutrients you'll have the upper hand with any algae.
