Just got caught up on reading this thread . Sorry to hear the troubles you've encountered. Hang in there though, we all have our horror stories.

In respone to your ATO failing. If its something that's gonna make you worry and feel uneasy, I would recommend the Elos Osmocontroller ATO for peace of mind. It has a much lower chance of failure do to no moving parts and is very accurate.

Keeps us posted....

Havent turned the lights back on yet but am seeing encouraging signs by the fact I cannot see anymore on the sand or on the piece of live rock it was on. Will only know for sure tomorrow morning when I resume the lighting.

Skimmer has taken an awful lot out so hopefully things will settle from here on in.

Will keep everyone posted tomorrow night when I return from work and no more of what is going, will have left for work before the lights fully come on in the morning, wont be able to see too well with just the moonlight LEDS on.

Alas not so poor cyano we knew you well.

Lights full on cycle today and no cyano left. Skimmer is a mess but wow 3 days of darkness worked like a charm.

There is so much gunk in the skimmer it is unbelievable that so much could have come from the water.

Thanks Reefing Madness for the suggestion. Worked like a charm.

Only downside, apart from the messy skimmer, is I cannot find one of my anemones, not sure if it gone or just hidden very well somewhere.

Slight issue with algae on the glass but can sort that tomorrow on water change Wednesday.

Coraline is growing nicely now as well on the powerheads, nice shade of purple on one and more appearing on my formally dead rock

Nems should come out shortly, but they are ticked off.

One of them is out and in a new location on a piece of live rock. I am not sure but there seems to be tiny little white blobs on one piece of live rock.

Havent got my camera at the moment to take a picture and my iphone wont pick it up well enough.

Have not seen these before.

Just noticed as well, the Montipora has regrown the small part I accidentally broke off when I moved it...glad it is doing well.

Have ordered the new bulbs but being a Provincial election day in Quebec today no delivery as post office was closed. Hopefully will have them tomorrow and everything will stay nice and clean like it is now.

Anemones or anemone at the moment is due a feed so will have to be careful not to blast too much at it with my syringe. Dont want to mess the tank up.

Nice smiley

This strategy will be my new first line of defense.

Great thread!

Learning practical information and acquiring new and effective ways of dealing with old problems are what forums are supposed to be all about.

Tazman, who, despite being very expert in fish keeping had enough humility to post this question. You could have posed it hypothetically, or claimed that all this was happening in a "friend's tank" but you just asked it! ReefingMadness put a possible solution out there We all had to wait, and Reefing didn't assume anything until you saw your result.

The final effect allowed us all to get something valuable.

I am frankly tired of people pretending to know everything, as though anyone knows everything.
Only being real and truthful in the way that you guys have just exemplified really helps.

My sincere thanks!
