I might get a stroke of luck if I can get my lfs to take my oscar and red zebra cichlid. That will free up my 20 gallon high.

Why? What are your ultimate plans for this tank?

It will make it more like sunlight and should not shock the fish (because of so much light at once) when I turn them on/off.

This is why so many people in this hobby use a combo of actinics and daylights. I have my actinics come on at 12:30, and turn off at 11:30, and my 10,000k's turn on at 3:30 and turn off at 9:30. This simulates a slightly more gradual change than just turning lights on and off...

Here are a few light fixtures you can go with. What is your plan? Reef? FO? FOWLR?

Nova Extreme SLRT-5 Fixtures: go with the 24" x 8" 4 bulb, saltwater.
Coralife Lunar Aqualights CP: I'm not personally a Compact Flourescent fan...
Aqualight Pro HQI/CP/Lunar Light: Best light production, but they run HOT...

reef. I might go out and get a 20 gallon long and use the 20 gallon high as a sump.

My personal favorites are T-5's HO. Do you plan on keeping SPS, LPS or just softies?

I want to be prepared to get any of them.

My pet store did take my oscar and red zebra cichlid. So my 20 gallon high is empty. Hopping to get a 20 gallon long or 29 gallon tank soon.

Halides or LED's supplemented with T5HO's would be the absolute best, but expensive.

Very true.

I actually had Halides on my 46 bow for a long time, but eventually went to T5HO's. Metal Halides use waaay to much electricity, and run very hot. I had a hard time in the summer with overheating in my tank, and couldn't afford a chiller. I switched to T5HO's, and love the output and effiency.

I have no experience with LED's. I just cannot see how those diodes give enough light penetration...

I have kept LPS and Softies with no problem for the past year with T5HO's. I haven't tried SPS, but I know people who successfully keep them with T5's.
