Racoon it doesn't take much. Most sponge filters you buy will say right on the box what size tank they will filter. If you look at the pictures in my tanks alb um you will see a flat sponge I use in my 2.5. It will filter up to 5 gallons. Most of then, flat or upright, are easily hid by plants in a 5 gallon tank.

Hi. I seen your post about sponge filters. Very awesome info! I'm looking into setting one up. With the sponge, is there a formula for how much surface area of sponge per gallon of tank? I got a 5.5 gal. With a single female betta. I want to grow enough BB to keep the water good but my tank can be viewed from all sides so I don't really want the sponge to be to big and destracting if you know what I mean.

My 75 is drilled. I absolutely love having a sump. I made it by splitting a 35 using plexiglass dividers siliconed in. The water dumps into a open area, then down through 5 layers of filter media, then up through 5 lbs. of lava rocks, then down over charcoal, then to the return pump. I also have a 5 gallon pal tied to it with tubing and a float valve for automatic top off. It increases water volume and airation.

Hi water dog, noticed in your siggy, you have a 35 gal sump for your tropical, just wondered how well it works for you is you tank drill or hang on overflow?
