Hey Ayala! If you're interested to see the progress I've made with housing Bo, I've posted an update as a reply to the thread~ if you could, would you please mind taking a look to see if I'm going in the right direction? Thank you so much for that amazing list you gave me! I took it to heart! ^_^

The black stuff is the carbon, yes.

I'd just test extra since you altered that old cartridge to make sure you don't have a mini cycle.

He's likely around 1.5 years. He's definitely not fading due to age. Even with a slow start I expect him to live at least another year+ in ideal conditions.

IDK about the info you got about leaching carbon, because I'd read a lot of studies where they do leach.. but maybe only happens with large ph shifts.

They do for sure start leaching phosphates though. How much depends on the carbon.

I don't know that carbon will be able to absorb all of it. A series of water changes is what I'd do. How old is he?

Ewww yeah that can definitely cause issues. Glad you took it out. How's the fish that was in the tank with it?

Well.. I can't remember what filter you're using but carbon has to be replaced every 1-4 weeks (manufacturer should say how long the carbon lasts) and it's always goodto run two forms of media in your filter or else you restart your cycle every time you replace the cartridge. Then you should only replace one media at a time.

Well the only place you'll see rust is on the metal in the tank that is rusting, but once that rust happens it will release toxins into the water you won't be able to see with your eyes. Do you have metal in your tank?

Remind me what and how much you're feeding?

That's a sign of SBD or other internal infection. Have you seen him poop? What color? is he bloated?
