it is about 17 inches tall, by 24 inches long, by 12 and a half inches wide. I actually have two of them with hoods, both are exactly the same model. I also have three other 10 gal. lying around, but I don't know if that matters.

Hmm....are you positive its a tall? What are the dimensions? When you look it up, your standard 20 gallon is often labeled as 'high' which makes it a little confused, but if the dimensions are 24"L x 13"W x 16"H you should be fine. By 'Tall' I mean more like an 'Extra Tall', which is more like 20"L x 10"W x 24"H....which is still doable, but not exactly ideal for betta who do best in shallower, longer tanks. Sorry, should have been a little more specific there...

Anyway, if you'd still like to look for a 20 long, you can check around local thrift stores and Craigslist to see if anyone has a second hand one for cheap. I'm not sure if its still going on, but Petco often has a $1 per gallon sale, so a plain empty 20 long would just be $20 though you'd have to get everything else for it separately. Generally getting the kits, the ones that come with a hood and a filter and such, tend to be a tad cheaper but I'm not sure if they have one for a 20 long....

Haha, always happy to help, you're very welcome! I hope little Merlin perks up after the changes. :)

thank you for your help with Merlin! you're right about my divider being store-bought, I got it from petsmart and it is very see through. Merlin does seem very intimidated by Peach, so I'm going to the store tomorrow to get the stuff I need to make my own divider like you said, and I'm also going to stop by the pet store to get some frill to provide more hiding places for Merlin. (and Peach too, their tank is pretty sparse at the bottom.) Again, thank you.

Sure thing! Glad to be of help. ;)
Ahh, thats still 10 more gallons! Generally so long as its not a 20 tall, you're good.
Assuming you're moving the Pleco in there with them, you could probably do about 6-7 females in a 20 gallon. :)

Hi dragonfish, Saphira here. thank you for your wonderful advice on sorority tanks. I happen to have a spare 20 gal. lying around (not a 20 gal. long unfortunately, just regular.) how many ladies do you think I could put in there once I set it up?
