I totally agree with you! anything more than 1 per 5-10 is ridiculous and mis uses the product. It will stress the fish at this level. Kidney issues soon to follow. Here is the thing. At low dose this is the best preventative out there and helps the fish osmoregulation. All and I mean all my fish will never be off it except for 1 wc per month of only primed water. this is because the change in salinity really screws over the pathogens as much as the salt... they are slow to adjust. This debate has raged for years now but its clearer to me now after speaking with the very best IBC and others way smarter than me. My bet is that if everyone used aq salt and at proper doses the amount of sick fish would go down 80%. Btw I respect you so much! My water is hard but because the salt also helps exchange ammonia and nitrate ions it helps because my ph is high and and sensitive to the ammonia and nitrites because of that.

Re your comments on the Aq use thread: IMO, adding 1 tsp Aq salt per 5-10 gal is fine.

But I see a lot of people recommending 1-3 tsp per 1 gal, which is WAY more than you use (5-30 times your dosage) and using this amount for up to 14 days. The stress on the kidneys would be incredible. And if the fish is already sick or stressed, well, this is why I generally don't recommend using it.

Is your water hard or soft? If it's soft, then adding a small amount of salt would definitely be beneficial. If it's really soft, then a small amount of magnesium and calcium salts might be worth considering, too.

+1. I'd be happier with Columnaris.... The tank and equipment has been cleaned, and will now sit unoccupied until I'm sure that any pathogens are dead, dead, and even more dead. (Dead pathogens make me happy.)

I hope it wasn't those filthy rotten stinking worms. They can be very contagious! Just hope it is Columnaris. I never thought I would say that. My bet is just columnaris because the worms tend to kill slower.

Well, when I got home from work, he was already gone. I'm not sure if it was Camallanus or not. The Columnaris wasn't responding to the furan meds, and he was becoming bloated despite not eating so I added prazi/metronidazole this morning. As I was looking at him, I thought I saw a few tiny worms but it was tough to tell. When I got home tonight, he was already gone. The other VT that I got the same day is doing fine though.

Gah! I've jinxed myself by asking about internal parasites! Brought home a fish from Walmart that had fin rot but was flaring at everything. He developed Columnaris, despite being in clean, warm water. (Treating it with Furan.) Today, I saw what appears to be Camallanus worms. No no no! Ew ew ew! (Are the called CamallANUS because that's where they protrude from, I wonder?).... It looks like Tractor Supply carries Panacur (Fenbendazole) dewormer. So I'm off to get some now....
