+1. I'd be happier with Columnaris.... The tank and equipment has been cleaned, and will now sit unoccupied until I'm sure that any pathogens are dead, dead, and even more dead. (Dead pathogens make me happy.)

I hope it wasn't those filthy rotten stinking worms. They can be very contagious! Just hope it is Columnaris. I never thought I would say that. My bet is just columnaris because the worms tend to kill slower.

Well, when I got home from work, he was already gone. I'm not sure if it was Camallanus or not. The Columnaris wasn't responding to the furan meds, and he was becoming bloated despite not eating so I added prazi/metronidazole this morning. As I was looking at him, I thought I saw a few tiny worms but it was tough to tell. When I got home tonight, he was already gone. The other VT that I got the same day is doing fine though.

Gah! I've jinxed myself by asking about internal parasites! Brought home a fish from Walmart that had fin rot but was flaring at everything. He developed Columnaris, despite being in clean, warm water. (Treating it with Furan.) Today, I saw what appears to be Camallanus worms. No no no! Ew ew ew! (Are the called CamallANUS because that's where they protrude from, I wonder?).... It looks like Tractor Supply carries Panacur (Fenbendazole) dewormer. So I'm off to get some now....

Yes The aquaculture fish farming industry would crash without the use of probiotics. I sprinkle the Lacto gg on bloodworms 1 or 2 times per week. Google scholar is a great place to get good info on studies. I also add it to frozen spirulina brine shrimp and have started working at mixing in different strains many of which are in your doggies probiotic mix. My opinion is that a combo of strains is best due to the fact that each strain has different strengths. Good luck with the research its a fascinating subject.

The very first article I looked at discussed how the use of commercial probiotics increased survival rate of fry, and introduced beneficial bacteria into the water which helped maintain better water quality (reducing phosphate, nitrate and nitrite concentrations).

Wow, you have a lot of fish. I think you should buy a house in the US so that you could sell some of your fry here!

So you're using L Rhamnosis GG with them? How much do you add per gallon? And how often do you add it? (You have no idea how much I want you to write up your study and submit it for publication to an aquatic journal! It would be SO great to see your study published.)

I use the capsules that my dog gets, which is a probiotic mixture, and generally just sprinkle some into the tank. I've thought about measuring it out, but so far, I haven't. It's a combination of L. acidophilus, L. plantarum, Bifidobacterium bifidum, L. casei, L. brevis, Bifidobacterium longum, Enterococcus thermophilus, and FOS (Fructooligosaccharides).

OK, I just searched Google Scholar for "use of probiotics in aquaculture." There were 8,130 hits. I'll need to look through some of them to see what some of these studies have shown.
