There is no real set time as to when you start to see ammonia, it could take up to a week or more for it to start showing. Fishless cycling unless you are using media from an established tank, can take 6-8 weeks to complete.
Keeping monitoring the tank and you should start to see ammonia soon.

Hi,
I have purchased my fist tank a 29 gallon and could use some advise. I have set it up for freshwater added my decor, water, heater and filter I am now ready to cycle the tank. I have done a lot of research including reading many posts on this site and have decided to do a fishless cycle. Because I can not find any ammonia I have added a medium raw shrimp inside a peace of nylon. the tank has been set up for 4 days now so far no ammonia. How long should it take before I start to see ammonia? and is there anything else I should be doing.
p.s. I have well water that has no additive and is not conected to a softner or filtration system, the water has been tested and is not hard it has a ph level of 7.2
any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated
