maybe he's trying to bite his tail? I don't know him as a tail-biter, though.

do you know why a betta would be lethargic then suddenly swim around in jerky movements?

Yeah, I find it easier just to tie it to something, so you dont have to deal with burying and re burying during each water change.

P.S. do you have a picture of your java fern? they turn a bit brown when reproducing.

Hey have you seen anyone around here that has a bowl with a heater? Is it possible to find an adjustable heater that will work in a bowl? if its even possible, i think itd be a good thing to feature in the newsletter; how to properly keep a fish bowl, mention it should be covered, etc.

I've found sometimes it took a while for my java fern to adjust to new conditions and that the leaves would develop a lot of brown/black spotting and die right back.

As long as the rhizome itself is still green and healthy looking, your java fern should bounce back. I cut practically all the leaves off one of my java ferns as it had died back and today it is ten times healthier than when I first got it.

When doing a fish in cycle it's usually low since there's not much ammonia for the BB to work with.
