There are many tutorials out there and I've seen people use all kinds of sponges including those you mentioned. You can easily google it and find a tutorial that works best for you. The important things is that you use an open cell foam so it doesn't clog up too fast and make sure it's the inert kind w/out any kinds of anti-bacterial agents or made with harmful chemicals. I've seen large filter sponges used but never found once when looking for supplies to make one.You just need that type of tube (seen people use hair rollers!), some airline tubbing, a small airstone (optional depending on the method), and a pump.
In a post a few days ago you mentioned that you can make your own spong filter.... I had questions about what kind of sponges. My fiance's MAKES sponges. Sea sponges, dish sponges, car sponges. I was kind of afraid to use the bright colored car sponges. Whats your opinion?
