I know who Ruffian and Barbaro were. I live in Kentucky. lol We're probably about 20-30 minutes from Churchill Downs and I've been there several times.

Thanks :) And what a nice comparison to Ruffian! She was an incredible filly! I'm so happy to hear someone else who even knows who Ruffian was! And Barbaro. I miss Mags, but I know she's not in any pain.

Yes, my son is quite the character! He's not allowed upstairs & I barely am either. He would if he were allowed. I guess we're mutually attached. He came into my life at a time when I really needed him. He needed me too. He's got special health problems that are life long. Which of your cats is your "baby"?

Running to Petco to refill his litter. We'll see if any new fishies come home w/me ;)

*hugs* I'm so sorry, Jenn. You two really put up a spectacular fight and you did the right thing. I think Mags would have been like Ruffian and just kept on trying even though she was hurting herself. I know it's rough but you helped her find peace.

Jack is a character. :) Does he not like it upstairs or is he not allowed? So cute, I wish my cats were that attached. Only one of them is and it actually borders on pyschotic obsession. o.O

Jack stays downstairs all of the time. I have to come upstairs to use the computer when I want to do more than my phone lets me do. He's whiny because he wants me by him 24/7! He won't go to bed for the night unless I'm already in bed with the lights out. Such a momma's boy ;)

Mags is still hanging on. Her coloring & breathing both look better. The red inflamed area is no longer red. I'm headed out to get the antibiotics now and we'll start them today. I might try the antibiotics first before bumping her to 3 teaspoons and see if she can handle them & then go up.

    Wish me luck!

I don't see how you can be making Mags feel WORSE. She's got warm, clean water, AQ salt to help her feel better and lots of love. She's a lucky girl and I think she wants to keep fighting for you.

Does Jack not come downstairs or does he just want you to go to bed so he can snuggle? Mine are brats, they don't wait for me to go to sleep. They just pile on the bed and zonk out so I have to move them later on.

I think if you feel she can handle it, then yes, bump her up to 3 tsps. If she can produce a lot of slime coat, it can help promote healing. What a plucky little girl. :)

I know you how feel. Maybe if it was a mammal who feels pain in a way similar to people, it might be a different issue but OFL says fish don't feel pain the same way we do. So maybe she's more comfortable than we think she is. Just give her lots of love like I know you will and she'll be a happy fish no matter what happens. :)

You're allergic to sulfa drugs too? I got a huge rash and swelled up like a balloon when I was a kid and I was given sulfa drugs for what turned out to be acute pneumonia. Whoo, that was a fun summer. Why do you always get sick for weeks during the summer and never during school so you can have time off? >.>

I'm glad Mags is hanging on. She's rallying back. I still worry about her back end but we'll tackle that issue if or when we come to it. Go Mags!

    Part 2

If you got Triple Sulfa or Tetracycline, that's all you need to do. If you got the Maracyn combo, then fill up the other half-gallon jug and repeat with the second med. Pour 1/2 cup of that med into the 1 gallon jug. Now you can use that 1 gallon jug to fill up the tank where Mags is.

For some of the meds, the dosage changes for the following days so you'll have to discard the water and make up a new batch with the new dose. You can then save these jugs to redose the meds during the daily water changes. Keep them for about 2 days, then mix up a fresh batch.

It's a pity you can't find Kanaplex at Petsmart, it would be the best option, mixed with Tetracycline, but oh well. Anyway, I hope this helps you. You can always PM me if you need help. Dosing small tanks is a pain in the rear and I'd be lost if it wasn't for DarkMoon helping me.

Good luck and hang in there, Mags!

Seriously? Animal cruelty? That's a new one on me. Well, since the animal rights activists don't seem to care much about the rights of fish, I doubt anyone would write you up for euthanizing Mags and ending her suffering.

I'm pleasantly surprised she survived. Is Mags in at least a gallon of water or do you think it's less than that? If it's less than that, then you'll need some kind of jug that can hold a gallon and 1-2 jugs that can hold at least half a gallon. If you get Triple Sulfa or Tetracycline, you only need 1 half gallon jug but if you get Maracyn I and II, then you'll need 2.

If Mags is in less than a gallon, then you have to mix up her water in the 1 gallon jug so fill it up and dechlorinate it. Set it aside. Fill one of the half-gallon jugs with 5 cups of dechlorinated water. Add in a dosage of the meds you got. Mix well. Now pour 1/2 cup of the medicated water into the gallon jug.
