I am on the East Coast in GA...The bag says that it is 78-85% aged pine bark, sand and perlite..I know I would have to get rid of the perlite.

I think some of the stuff ships out of different places. I've gotten one part of my order from Louisville, KY and another part from Fernley, NV before.

It sounds like a good idea to start with DIY on the 5.5 and just get used to the way it works.

I bought "Earthgro" potting soil. I had read several planted tank articles that mentioned the name and didn't realize they were talking about "top soil" sigh. The one I got is mostly "pine bark"..which I'm sure is not good. I was going to just dig my backyard up, but we live near the ocean, and it contains a lot of sand, and maybe even salt, I'm not sure...any ideas please? I'm getting discouraged and I haven't even started yet.

Amazon is always like that, shipping things separately so they get to you faster. I feel bad for the environment even though I recycle the boxes and stuff but hey, I like getting my stuff fast. :D

Aaah, okay, thanks for telling me about the C02 tubing. I never would've guessed. o.O

Is C02 tubing different than regular airline tubing?

Why would someone give away a broken tank? :/ I'm glad it didn't explode all over with water in it. That could have been very bad.

    Can the 5.5 be siliconed?

You know way more abut pans than I do. And yeah, sometimes DIY isn't always worth it. Haha, guess we know what you want for Christmas.

You are a plant expert now, you know that? :D

I'm just not sure. His tail is funny. At first I thought someone took a bite out of it but if that's the case, it's not growing back. I'll try to get a pic of it in a few days.

I'll be really interested to see how this turns out. I may try that with some of my plants.

What do you think of double swordtails? It seems that's what my male swordtail may be and I don't know if the fry will inherit that or not. They're still too small to develop their swords yet if they're male. So far I just know the biggest one is a female and she's not tricolored. I'd sell her as a painted swordtail. Only 3 or so out of 6 seem to be tricolored in this batch. Hopefully the next batch will be larger.

How do you dry hairgrass? Petsmart has some that they sell in little boxes and I swear I don't know how they're alive because they get NO light. Almost bought some crypts.

Yeah, the first time I tried to drain the 29gal, I sucked and sucked on that siphon until I almost passed out.
