The pond is in and it looks super. :D I'm building the filter over the weekend: a 5 litre bucket with a layer of gravel, a layer of filter wool and ceramic rings, a layer of Matrix and a layer of some wierd stuff my dad bought to kill fleas, that apparently is a great pond filter medium.

Quick question: how much crushed coral do you reckon I'd be needing to raise the hardness from 1 degree to...whatever is ideal for goldies?

Thanks, Izzy! Finally, we have a definite date - the pond goes in tomorrow, and I'm ordering the pump today. I will get a pair of comets from a friend either Friday or the Friday after that.

I'm going to have to do a fish-in cycle, methinks, just due to time constraints. When you say not to put them in if it is colder than 60F, is that colder than 60F all the time, or just at any point? For instance, it is still getting as high at 76F during the day, but dropping below 60 at night. Is it too late? :S

Thanks once more for all your help. :)

They do get pretty cold. The big problem here is that whether is so unpredictable - we'll have rainstorms in the morning and 30 degree celcius heat and pure blue skies an hour later. One Christmas (middle of summer) we had a huge hailstorm that flooded the local shops.

It's already down to about 60F during the coldest part of the night now, although during the day it is still getting up to 90F.

I re-tested our water today, and it is one degree of hardness, which is insanely soft. Should I put some crushed coral in the filter to raise it?

Also, do you have any tips on how to transport and acclimatise a 10-inch fish? I don't have a fish baggie big enough, so I can't do my normal floating in the pond thing. Should I try and drip-acclimatise him in a big plastic tub first?
