They do get pretty cold. The big problem here is that whether is so unpredictable - we'll have rainstorms in the morning and 30 degree celcius heat and pure blue skies an hour later. One Christmas (middle of summer) we had a huge hailstorm that flooded the local shops.

It's already down to about 60F during the coldest part of the night now, although during the day it is still getting up to 90F.

I re-tested our water today, and it is one degree of hardness, which is insanely soft. Should I put some crushed coral in the filter to raise it?

Also, do you have any tips on how to transport and acclimatise a 10-inch fish? I don't have a fish baggie big enough, so I can't do my normal floating in the pond thing. Should I try and drip-acclimatise him in a big plastic tub first?

You're right that you don't have time for ammonia or even a planted cycle. Just how cold do your winters get? I wouldn't want to put a fish in a pond below like 60F. Also remember that the lower the water temp, the slower the BB will be able to replicate.

    Hi Izzy :)
I have an update on the pond! It will be going in early April, which is slightly later than I wanted. It's the second month of Autumn for us. How late in the year do you think I can wait to put Fishy in it? My two fish will be going in ASAP as I'm hoping to do a jump-start fish-in cycle using cycled media, those two fish and some Stability. I don't have time (or ammonia) to do fishless. :(

Aww thanks, Bomba! It's been fun for me, too. I love writing, and this combines that hobby with my fish hobby! ^-^

Yay! Another kuhli lover! ^-^ I'm glad I could help! We'll have to share pictures of our kuhlis we we're both done. I also have a slightly higher pH. Driftwood and oak leaves do a great job at bringing it down. I haven't tried peat moss yet, but before I get my cardinals I will.

Yay! Good water for kuhlis makes me extremely happy, and discus (one day, when I have a proper tank) has been a long-term dream, so super yay. :) 6.8 pH is in my aged tank, though. I might experiment with peat moss at some point, see what effect it has...
Thanks so much for your help! :)

All of the choices I listed for you would be great and very pretty. Cardinals are my favorite (I'm also lucky enough to have very soft water). I would try to find wild-caught ones as they are actually sustainably harvested and look much better than tank-bred ones, but I would let the tank age a little bit and the pH drop around 6 before you add them. If you have a large enough tank (75 gal and up I think) you could try for discus. I have very similar water to yours and will be stocking my planted 29 gal tank with 10 kuhli loaches, 10 cardinal tetra, and a thick lips gourami.

Sorry to bother you again, but I've made a goldfish pond question thread that I would be super grateful if you, as the resident pond expert, could have a peek at. :) It's under the habitat thread, but I have no idea how to link you there.... :(
