Hello again! A couple of questions if you don't mind...

I don't like having a substrate in my 2.5 gallon, but would an over-sized sponge filter make up for lack of surface area?

Also, for one betta alone in a cycled 2.5 gallon, do you recommend once weekly 50% water changes?

    Thanks!

I'm just a retired person enjoying life living in SoCal. Learning a lot about the animate world after spending my life modifying the parts of the inanimate world for Mammon.

Hey Hallyx, is there any way you could show me a video of your sponge filter(s) for your bettas so I can see what the flow looks like?

Or can a sponge filter never really be too strong for a betta?

Hi Hallyx, The basic chemistry information in bahamut285 article is basically sound and pretty standard . He is a little confuse on the subject of alkalinity and kH but close. kH is the measure of carbonate or bicarbonate and while these affect alkalinity other thing do also in the environment carbonate alkalinity tends to make up most of the total alkalinity other Ions do also Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl_, SO4, and NO3 al make up total qlklinity (some of these are measured as gH). As far as his water change recommendations go I totally disagree. Your bio load and nitrates should dictate you water change schedule IMHO. As far as cycling small aquariums what is the problem you an I both know it can be done successfully if you do over stock amd do your maintenance. In the Goldfish houses there are 4000 gallons of water and I do much more maintenance on those two houses that I do on my two nano tanks(a 2.5 gallon Spec and a 6 gallon Edge) why a very light Bio load and plants

Thank you Hallyx, I appreciate that I consider that quite a compliment from you. Personally, I think you have a wider range of knowledge & experience from what I've read in your posts. I'm quite the newbie, less than 2 yrs, so my knowledge is limited, I can only share my experiences & hope it helps.

My 2.5g tanks, 1 at work & 1 at home, do not have live plants & I haven't been testing either. I do twice weekly water change.s typically around 80% each time with a 100% periodically. I have tested in the past & it took about 4 days, if I remember correctly for ammonia to show as .25.

I got crazy busy for a while! Just moved to a new place and I'm in the process of setting up two NPT's. I'm down to one species at the moment, I have my 4 ocellata and their babies. I'm hoping they will spawn again once they get settled in :)

Thank you, Hallyx! The main purpose of writing the ammonia measurement so specifically was to be as clear as possible, is all. Haha, I'm sure it doesn't help that both of my parents are science majors of some sort!

Thanks! Most of my aquarium experience is with saltwater tanks, seahorses mainly. I've only been keeping Bettas for about a year now. Really getting seriously into Bettas in the past few months. Do ponds count as aquarium experience? Haha, cause I've always had ponds too! In the process of setting up my new 1200 gal pond in the backyard.
