Thanks for the info, Ajones. :) I usually only sleep about 4 hours at night, wake at 6:30AM and then return to sleep for another 4-5 hours a few hours later. But then I am often still very sleepy later in the day. I really have no idea what's up with my sleep patterns. I have an appointment with a sleep neurologist in November so hopefully I can figure it out. When you sleep in REM, that's when most dreaming occurs, right? I have very vivid dreams pretty much every night. I don't know if that means anything.
Narcolepsy can manifest itself in a variety of ways. :) Excessive daytime sleepiness is when you get 8+ hours of sleep a night and you STILL find yourself needing to sleep during the day, or suddenly falling asleep. If you're only getting 2-3 hours a night it's no surprise that you're falling asleep all over the place. Also, another big symptom of narcolepsy is irregular sleep cycles. I don't go through the 4 stages of sleep, I only sleep in deep sleep, or REM. It's odd. Haha. There are a few other varieties of narcolepsy but this is the one you are most familiar.
Doesn't narcolepsy hit like really fast, like boom, you're instantly asleep? I go through periods where, a few times a month, I will get overwhelmingly sleepy and sleep for 20+ hours. Fell asleep during dinner once, at a restaurant. Narcolepsy or chronic fatigue syndrome?
